What is the difference between Pilates & Yoga?

I am often in a position where people compare yoga and pilates and have more often than not, referred to me as a yoga instructor.

I wanted to clear this up for you and give you a better idea of the differences as well as the similarities.

Pilates

Mild to moderate cardio workout

Toning and strengthening

High Intensity Movements when progressions used

Deep chest breathing (lateral thoracic)

Pilates Mat with the option of Reformer Pilates and the optional use of equipment such as resistance bands, balls and magic circles

Yoga

Focus on balance

Mild cardio workout

Increases strength

Helps achieve inner peace

Relaxation

Deep abdominal breathing

Fixed postures

Physical and mental health

Yoga mat and optional blocks

Both

Low Impact

Increase core strength

Increase flexibility

Increase balance

May alleviate stress, headaches and back pain

Improved range of movement

 

At the end of the day, they are both beneficial to our bodies and can be a great practice to help keep us fit and mobile well into our lives.

Some exercises may need to be modified to suit the participant so be sure to highlight any current conditions or previous injuries in your pre-questionnaire to give you the best experience.
